As you all probably know it is possible to access BF with 77 Hz CTCSS, at present this, or a 1750 Hz tone burst, can be used. Therefore BF, when in use, needs to have carrier squelch to allow for signals that are not transmitting CTCSS. A proposal has been put forward that BF is changed to CTCSS protection on RX, this would mean that people would need to transmit CTCSS to be heard through the repeater. But it would also mean that we could lower the squelch threshold on BF's receiver to allow weaker signals access, I'm sure you have all heard various mobiles that are strong enough to be heard but are only relayed 50% of the time as the squelch keeps closing on them. At present it needs to be relatively tight due to occasional wide band electrical interference near to the site that holds it open, the frying bacon sound that you may have heard. A number of other repeaters have moved to full CTCSS protection without any major problems, locally GB3PI being one. So the question is, what do you think? Is anyone out there still using a set that does not have CTCSS capability? Any other thoughts?
